Introducing Medwise: Organising the world’s medical knowledge
Introducing Medwise
Founded by Dr Keith Tsui and Luis Ulloa, Medwise enables clinicians to find instant, accurate answers to complex questions. Using the latest AI and natural language processing, the platform not only saves clinicians valuable time, but it also helps to alleviate the burden on healthcare professionals, reducing staff burnout, cutting appointment costs and reducing clinical variability; all of which adds up to better quality of care and patient outcomes.
As a junior doctor on night shifts, often alone, Keith turned to either a pocketbook of advice written by senior colleagues, or Google as he searched for evidence and guidance to confirm his decisions and plans for patient care. Keith wasn’t convinced this was the right way to deliver the best care for patients and so the idea for Medwise was conceived.
AI-supported clinical decision-making
Medwise uses transformer-based neural networks to organise the latest medical and scientific evidence. It’s impossible for doctors to know everything, so Medwise provides actionable and concise evidence-based answers at the point of care.
Bringing the latest in AI to patient consultations, the platform displays only the most relevant passages from multiple trusted sources. And it’s quick, saving clinicians on average 2.6 minutes per patient consultation. Medwise isn’t domain specific, so doctors from different specialties can add information sources and vote on the search results they like best; the AI will continually learn and personalise results according to users’ feedback. The platform aggregates information from major national guidance such as NICE and professional knowledge bases.
Medwise is trained to understand medical language and how to resolve ambiguous and implicit enquiries. So, if you search for ‘swelling after flu jab’ the AI will also show results for ‘adverse cutaneous reactions after influenza vaccine’. Even though none of the words of the initial query are in the results the AI can make the link.
Organising the world’s medical knowledge
The vision of Medwise is to organise the world’s medical knowledge and enhance every clinician’s capabilities for better patient care, by providing a single source of truth for the latest and most accurate clinical information.
The speed of advancement in science and innovation provides both a gift and challenges for the clinical community. Where 50 years ago there were one or two drugs to treat a condition like asthma or diabetes, there are now endless treatment options. So keeping up with the latest developments is not an easy task for healthcare professionals. At a time where clinician burnout is at an all time high, with healthcare professionals leaving in their droves, Medwise is here to provide a part of the solution, curating the latest, most trusted and reliable medical information in one place with instant clinical answers.
In addition to the fast pace of medical developments, regional NHS organisations also adapt guidelines - but Medwise can solve that too, partnering with local organisations to ensure that clinicians are provided, not only with the latest information, but also with relevant local adaptations to guidelines and protocols to help improve the quality, safety, and consistency of patient care.
Better answers, better quality of care and better patient outcomes
The technology behind the platform is best-in-class but what is just as important is the user experience for anyone using it. By understanding implicit queries and browsing multiple sources to produce answers, clinicians are presented with sources they previously would not have considered or consulted, which directly improves the quality of care delivered to patients. Healthcare professionals using the platform are increasingly realising that through Medwise, they’re able to find actionable, concise, evidence-based answers to clinical questions that they’re unable to find elsewhere. As a result, specialist referrals can be more accurate and patients can receive the right care more quickly.
Unwarranted variation in clinical care costs the NHS £5billion per year. Medwise provides a solution to address this issue, which ultimately improves patient outcomes and alleviates the burden on healthcare professionals and health systems by reducing burnout and reducing appointment costs.
The platform is currently being used in primary care settings by GPs; there are opportunities on the horizon to branch out into telemedicine, Integrated Care Systems (ICS) and non-governmental organisations, supporting doctors treating HIV patients on the African continent.
