Medwise AI at NHS Executive Strategy Summit 2023

On 7 November, Medwise AI hosted a roundtable at the NHS Executive Strategy Summit on how organisations can address the ongoing challenges faced by the clinical workforce within integrated care systems.

The recent NHS Executive Strategy Summit brought together a collective of healthcare leaders to explore the latest advancements in operational strategy. As a sponsor of this event, we showcased our commitment to developing clinically-led AI-powered digital solutions that empower the workforce to deliver exceptional care.

Keynote speakers set an inspiring tone, emphasising the need for renewed dedication to quality improvement initiatives in order to address the challenges faced by the NHS. Following these motivational presentations, our sponsored roundtable delved into the ongoing challenges of the clinical workforce before proposing solutions to provide support.

The shortage of doctors and nurses poses a well-reported hurdle to the effective functioning of the clinical workforce. Roundtable participants discussed how newer roles, such as clinical pharmacists, physician associates, and nurse practitioners, have helped alleviate staff shortages. However, concerns were raised about the hidden potential for increased pressure on GPs who may still have overall supervision responsibility, leading to further burnout.

The role of technology in addressing the ongoing challenges of the workforce was also explored. While technology can streamline processes and provide valuable support to clinicians, there are concerns about poor interoperability among EHR systems and the potential for tech-driven referrals to worsen the backlog of complex cases.

Enter Medwise.ai, a solution designed to support both established and emerging clinical roles. Medwise.ai empowers practitioners with informed decision-making, adherence to guidelines, quick access to answers, and a reduction in the burden on GPs for supervision. Medwise.ai offers potential time saving of 25% in consultations by streamlining information retrieval.

In our subsequent roundtable we brainstormed solutions with a focus on reducing the burden felt by frontline clinicians. The participants shared their perspectives, highlighting a number of areas for improvement:

  • Optimising clinical productivity by improving information flow

  • Rebalancing the technological focus from acute to community settings

  • Incorporating user-friendly dashboards to increase visibility of workforce data

  • Utilising technology to anticipate discharges and measure baselines for goal-setting

  • Preventing task repetition and streamlining processes through technology

  • Advocating for open APIs and interoperability for seamless connectivity

The roundtable concluded with a consensus that a collaborative approach is essential to addressing the ongoing challenges of the clinical workforce. Participants emphasised the need for clinicians, managers, policymakers, and technology providers to work together to develop and implement effective solutions.

The summit concluded with a final address, reinforcing the importance of sharing and celebrating best practice in ops strategy. We're excited about supporting our NHS colleagues and look forward to serving this engine of the healthcare workforce.
